This week’s Spotlight on Tech features StarGarden, a company that has provided innovative Human Resources and Payroll software since 1984. They help clients maximize the value of their HR and Payroll departments.
Describe your company and your primary product(s) and/or service(s).
StarGarden is a software company specializing in cloud-based and on premise HR software. In addition to integrated core HR and payroll software systems, we also offer workflow automation, role-based access control, and complete HCM (human capital management) functionality. StarGarden has an in-house implementation team that provides project management for on-site installation, integration of new systems and conducts on-site or online training for end users.
How many employees currently work at your company and where are you located?
15 employees work out of our headquarters in Vancouver, BC, and 3 employees work in its New Zealand office.
Describe the culture at your company.
StarGarden is an extremely flexible workplace that makes work-life balance a priority. Everyone is able to work from home 2 or 3 times a week and set their own work hours rather than sticking to a “9 to 5” routine. It especially encourages learning and entrepreneurial development; 10% of each team member’s worktime is dedicated to learning new skills or striving for innovative advancement. We also have regular social gatherings that involves something fun to do; for example, last month it was a trip to the Escape Room.
What does your leadership team (and company as a whole) do to support/grow that culture?
Despite having various leadership or departmental titles, StarGarden has a relatively flat hierarchical structure. Each team member is free to ask for a preferred assignment and they can work in the areas of their choosing. StarGarden also provides opportunities and sponsorships for work-related courses and conferences.
When your employees talk about your company, what do they brag about?
Our company might be one of the few tech organizations with an equal gender parity. Apart from that, the flexible work environment with ability to set our own schedules is a big hit. The team genuinely loves to work with each other, a few of our team members have worked here for decades, and we pride ourselves on our family-like atmosphere which extends to our customers. The office also sports a fully loaded pantry that is too hard to resist.
Describe your most recent achievement, milestone, or reason for bragging rights.
StarGarden was awarded the Rising Star 2016 and Great User Experience awards among HR software companies by Finances Online after their independent review of our software. Our newest software offering, StarGarden HCM 5.0, has been well received by the market, and StarGarden was recently named by CIO Review as one of the “20 most promising HR Technology Solution Providers.”
What is your company goal for the coming year?
Our ongoing goals are to continue to provide great service to our customers, improve and refine the end-user experience, provide additional analytical and dashboard capabilities in our software, and increase our customer reach in the market.
