09 Mar 2015 Spotlight on IoT Design Shop
1. Describe your company and your primary products and services.
IoT Design Shop is an engineering services company that specializes in developing products for the Internet of Things. We pride ourselves on developing elegant user-centric solutions for our clients. Our projects typically involve a combination of mobile Apps, cloud services and low-power hardware. This past year we’ve built wearables, smart appliances, custom iBeacons and launched ConnectionMaker, our own indoor location system, and Signul, our personal beacon system. The latter was successfully crowdfunded and can be pre-ordered while we go through the certification process.
2. How many employees currently work at your company?
We have 4 full-time employees and have grown project teams up to 10 people by leveraging our partner network.
3. Where are you located?
Our office is located in Port Coquitlam. There’s lots of parking here and if you live in Vancouver, Graham is open to starting a rideshare program!
4. Describe the culture at your company.
We don’t have corporate tenants or anything like that, but a few qualities that everyone on the team shares are curiosity, imagination, extreme focus and a primal drive to innovate. As we grow we’re looking to bring people on board who also hold these things dear.
5. When your employees talk about your company, what do they brag about?
Our project work is done pre-launch so we can’t openly talk about it. All we can say is that we’re working on cutting-edge tech. And really, what person in the tech industry doesn’t say that?
It’s a great feeling when one of the products we developed launches and we can truly start talking about it. A typical reaction when we tell people about our work is “holy s#*!, that was you?!”. That feels good.
6. Describe your most recent achievement, milestone, reason for bragging rights.
Our greatest achievement is that every single one of our clients is extremely happy with our work. When a potential client asks for references it’s an incredible honour that our clients, past and present, are so willing to vouch for the high quality and value of our work.
7. What is your company goal for the coming year?
We are expanding in all areas from software and hardware development to our in-house production capabilities. This means more people to design and build products and also more 3D printers, CNC mills and injection moulding equipment. We’re bursting at the seams in our current workspace and have even started to take up space in our founders’ homes and garages. We’re currently looking for a new office where we can continue to grow our team and business.
