Spotlight on Clio

In this week’s Spotlight on Tech, we look at a company that is transforming the way lawyers do business by taking Legal Practices into the cloud. Clio is working to disrupt the legal industry and were recently recognized on the Deloitte Fast 50 and Fast 500 listing. In addition to that, Clio offers a fun work environment, collaborative culture, and exciting achievements worth bragging about. With over 130 employees worldwide and a plans for future growth, Clio is a company to watch out for.

1. Describe your company and your primary product(s) and/or service(s).

Clio creates cloud-based software that helps lawyers and law firms around the world manage their business, cases, and operations. Our primary product is a web-based platform that allows lawyers to access all of their firm and client information from anywhere on any device (in court, at home, in the office, at a client’s workplace, or in a coffee shop). We’re modernizing the way lawyers practice and the way they do business.

2. How many employees currently work at your company?

We have 130+ employees overall, with 100 at headquarters in Vancouver. The rest are in other offices like Toronto, Dublin, and Powell River or working remotely from home in places like Chicago, Calgary, Edmonton, and Nova Scotia.

3. Where are you located?

Head office is in Burnaby right across from the BCIT Campus (near Canada Way and the Willingdon exit on the No. 1). There is a free shuttle from the Gilmore skytrain station to the office.

4. Describe the culture at your company.

The culture is very open and collaborative. Employees are encouraged to work together, find solutions, celebrate success, and lift each other up. They work with the latest tools and technologies and live the mantra of cloud computing (almost all of the company’s software is cloud-based). They also have lots of fun—there are games on site (pingpong, video games, foosball, board games), there is an amazing wellness program, and a variety of other perks ranging from beautiful common areas and lounges, to an on-site yoga studio and zen room, and loads of opportunities for learning and excelling in your profession.

5. What does your leadership team (and company as a whole) do to support/grow that culture?

The leaders are very open and approachable. No one at Clio has an office. The CEO and COO (Jack Newton and Rian Gauvreau) founded the company six years ago and insist that it keeps its scrappy, smart-but-fun, and always curious, always learning mentality. Other company leaders actively participate in company activities, they connect and communicate with people at every level of the company, they listen to varying view points, and they live by the values the company celebrates.

6. When your employees talk about your company, what do they brag about?

Aside from challenging and rewarding work, people at Clio love the extras they get here: the wellness programs, the beautiful open office space, perks like espresso machines and other beverages, approachable leaders, and a quick paced, ever growing company that doesn’t sit still and is always looking to innovate.

7. Describe your most recent achievement, milestone, reason for bragging rights.

Lot of recent achievements: Deloitte Fast 50 and Fast 500 listing, hugely successful user conference, high rate of customer satisfaction, a $20 million Series C venture capital investment in 2014, CEO was nominated for Entrepreneur of the Year, new office renovated last quarter of 2014.

8. What kinds of roles are you hiring for?

In 2015 the focus of hiring is on product development (so roles for programmers, developers, QA, user interface/experience designers, mobile, etc.) but we will also be hiring in other areas including sales, marketing, business development, and customer support.

9. What kinds of people are you looking for?

We look for smart people who are collaborative, have their own personalities, share their knowledge, experience, and insights with others, and want to have an impact on growing a company and a business in a profession (legal) that is undergoing tremendous challenges and changes.

10. What is your company goal for the coming year?

We want to grow and improve EVERYTHING: expand our customer base, increase our customer satisfaction, improve our product, provide more value, host an even better customer conference, be smarter in sales and marketing, provide even better and more responsive customer support, be healthier and happier in our jobs, and do more new and exciting things. They’re all pretty darn good to begin with, but we want it to be better.
