Spotlight on Charitable Impact

Describe your company and its product.

Charitable Impact is for anyone who wants to make a difference, no matter what causes they choose to support. Our Impact Account is like an online bank account for charitable giving, where people can manage their giving and create the change they want to see in the world. All from one place.

What year did your company start?

2011

Which city (or cities) are you located?

Vancouver

Describe your company culture in three words.

Generous, kind and imaginative.

How do you celebrate company or employee wins?

We foster collaboration and make it a habit to celebrate our team’s accomplishments. Our weekly Tuesday huddles feature team member shout outs on ideas or projects. We come together at Friday happy hour to celebrate the ‘wins of the week’ and recognize our hard-working team with fun monthly events such as Waffle Wednesday and Massage Mondays. We’re doing things to make sure our people connect in inspiring, imaginative ways and feel recognized for their contributions.

What is the problem that you are trying to solve?

Wanting to help others comes naturally. Knowing how to make a difference through charitable giving doesn’t. Charitable Impact is here to help people give the way they want, to who they want, when they want and get support with making your biggest impact possible.

What is your biggest milestone to date?

The Charitable Impact community—110,000+ people—has donated more than $530 million to the causes they care about, benefiting 9,000 charities.

What is your biggest challenge?

We are setting out to grow a more effective giving culture, one donor at a time.

What is your motto?

Imagine a brighter future. Let’s make it happen.

How are you making an impact?

We work towards a world where giving is an intentional and joyful part of daily life. We help donors feel confident in their giving, and to make an impact in the most intentional, personally meaningful, and cost-effective way possible.

What is your hope for the future of tech in BC?

There is an opportunity to create more “community” in the tech sector. We imagine a future where tech companies connect, work together and help each other succeed more.

Lightning Round with John Bromley, Founder and CEO of Charitable Impact

What excites you about your job?

Working towards an experience where giving can be easily integrated into everyday living, socially and transactionally. In other words, it excites me to work towards our vision for Charitable Impact.

What was the biggest obstacle you had to overcome?

When it comes to charitable giving, there’s distance between what people say they want to do and what they actually do. I made it our company’s mission to close this gap. We set out to engage people in participating more regularly in creating the change they want to see in the world.

If you can give advice to your 20 year-old self, what would you say?

Struggle, or failure is valuable so long as you keep your head held high.

What are your pet peeves?

A lack of information to make informed decisions.

Words of wisdom to other tech CEOs or founders?

Communication is way easier said than done. Even when you think you’re doing it well and that people are ‘in the know’… you’ve almost certainly got a lot more communicating to do.
