Spotlight on Blender

In this week’s Spotlight on Tech, we look at an interactive agency that specializes in investor marketing solutions. In the last decade, Blender has worked with over 500 publicly traded and private companies providing web strategy, design, development and campaign management. From good foosball games to Fridays with the FUN Committee, Blender prides themselves with their close-knit and creative culture. Read on to learn more about what life is like at Blender…

1. Describe your company and your primary services.

Blender is a digital agency in Vancouver, BC. We create websites and mobile-first digital solutions for companies with investors. Our clients include small to large cap public companies as well as startups. We love helping companies share their story through innovative websites and marketing campaigns.

We’re not ones to brag, so we’ll let our clients do the talking:

2. When your employees talk about your company, what do they brag about?

We’re small, we’re focused, and we’re fearless. There are 17 of us, and we work out of our office in the beautiful Coal Harbour area of downtown Vancouver. We feel pretty lucky.

What makes our job the best? At Blender you have the ability to shape both your own role and the company itself. If you have an idea about a client project or see a way to improve things, we’ll most likely try it out. As long the idea is in line with either our client’s vision or our company goals, things like zombie apocalypse videos, infographics, fun marketing guides, and best-dressed social media campaigns are all possibilities. (These have actually all happened).

3. Describe the culture at your company.

Sometimes we think our unofficial tagline should be, ‘Never underestimate the power of good food or good foosball’. Close-knit, cliché as it may be, seems appropriate to add here. Since our size allows us to squeeze the whole company around a long restaurant table, we like to travel out of office on Fridays to learn some more about each other—all organized with love by the FUN committee, and yes, that’s an actual committee at Blender.

4. Describe your most recent achievement.

What we’re most proud of lately is our commitment to trying inventive things within our industry and approaching our projects with a ‘why not?’ attitude.

For example, last month we attended the annual IR Magazine IR Awards in New York. Blender was asked to present the ‘Best Use of Social Media’ award at the event. While we could have simply opened the envelope onstage and congratulated the winner, we instead decided it was an opportunity to do something that no one would expect. We created an interactive digital experience prior to the awards with a boxing-themed campaign that pitted each nominee against each other. We could talk about it all day, but how about you take a look at this teaser video instead, and play around on the interactive site?

5. What is your company goal for the coming year?

This year we’ve expanded our business into a new vertical: Investor marketing for growth stage companies and startups in tech. Our experience with public companies and investor marketing makes us great allies to help these up-and-coming companies with their digital marketing strategies. Hopefully, as a result of our help, they’ll gain access to capital and be able to grow their businesses. It’s an exciting time for the BC tech sector, and as members of that community we can’t wait to see the direction it’s headed. We feel privileged to be a part of the growth and the networking that is putting BC on the map when it comes to technology and innovation.
