VANCOUVER, BC, June 20, 2013 – Add Twitter to Lotusland’s impressively expanding portfolio of social media giants.

The company has announced it will open an office in Vancouver – a “Global Centre of Excellence” – and is advertising for newly graduated software engineers with a minimum requirement of a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from a Top 100 university.

Twitter would join new media companies like Facebook, Hootsuite (the company that allows uses to combine and manage Facebook and Twitter feeds), Amazon, and Microsoft on B.C.’s westcoast.

“We are looking to recruit a handful of new graduates with boundless potential so that we can build a world-competitive software engineering centre around them,” Twitter wrote in the job posting on its website (although it somewhat ironically hasn’t ‘tweeted’ about it yet).

“Not only will you make a visible and immediate impact on our dynamic ecosystem, you will fit right in alongside some of the brightest minds in the industry.”

Twitter has been makes waves in its coming soon-ish Canadian market. In April, it announced it was opening a ‘Twitter Canada’ office in Toronto, and former CBC director of English language services Kristine Stewart will head up the company’s first foray north of the 49th.

“It’s a testament to the strength of the tech ecosystem here in Vancouver,” said Bill Tam, president and CEO of B.C. Technology Industry Association, to the CBC. “I think for many years we’ve been developing not just the mobile ecosystem, but we’re really strong in web in social media, in fact in data analytics and cloud computing.”

In March, Facebook also announced it was setting up shop in Vancouver, in a 20,000 sq. ft. office at 1555 West Pender, in downtown’s Coal Harbour neighbourhood.
