IKOMED is a young and energetic medical device company based in Vancouver BC. We are engaged in the research and development of medical device technologies:

Our Aegis smart shutter system, which has been commercialized in the US, incorporates machine vision, artificial intelligence, and a high-speed electro-mechanical system to reduce X-ray radiation in fluoroscopy. Fluoroscopy is a medical imaging technology that is widely used to create real-time videos of internal organs, through X-ray radiation, to guide minimally invasive procedures where catheters or other devices are inserted into the body to diagnose and treat patients. While fluoroscopy-guided procedures reduce the need for surgery and help save lives, they expose medical staff to large amounts of X-ray radiation, with the associated risks resulting in cataracts, cancer, etc.

We are also developing a device for the non-invasive treatment of emphysema, a type of COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), using RF radiation. Emphysema is a debilitating and progressive disease which is caused by smoking, environmental factors, or genetic factors. It is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Today, treatment is focused on alleviating symptoms with no cure available. With the ATMOS device, our goal is to develop and bring to the market a non-invasive treatment method which will improve the lives of millions of patients around the world.

About the work – your responsibilities

IKOMED is looking for a talented and self-driven Computational Specialist to join our multi-disciplinary project team as a full-time employee in the development of our ATMOS device for the treatment of emphysema. You have the unique opportunity to join the project at an early stage and play an important part in shaping the product. Your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Data management and analysis
    • Create computational infrastructure for organizing, analyzing, and cross-referencing prototype test data to discover and explore trends and correlations
    • Develop metrics for device performance
    • Develop and standardize data visualization methods
  • Simulation
    • Select or develop, and validate simulation tools
    • Develop numerical models of the system under development, including device components and relevant aspects of patient anatomy and physiology
    • Design, develop, and optimize RF and thermal simulations
    • Validate simulation results with real-world data
  • Thermal imaging system development
    • Participate in the research and development of medical image processing algorithms for thermal measurements
    • Design and conduct bench testing experiments for algorithm validation and optimization
    • Support integration of the algorithms and thermal imaging hardware with the system
  • Statistical planning and analysis
    • Support the development of testing strategies and procedures which will yield clean and statistically viable results
    • Contribute to protocol development for pre-clinical and clinical device testing
    • Analyze test data
    • Support the work of Contract Research Organizations as needed
  • System testing
    • Provide guidance for bench testing based on the results of test data analysis
    • Participate in the setup and running of bench tests
    • Develop software with UI for collecting and processing data from various test jigs
    • Assist with software testing, define and execute test cases
  • Literature reviews
    • Conduct literature reviews within research fields such as electromagnetics, hyperthermia treatments, thermal imaging, biostatistics

About you – your experience and qualifications

We believe in hiring smart people and giving them the direction and resources they need to succeed. To thrive in this role at IKOMED, you have to have

  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in an engineering or science discipline (e.g., Electrical, Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering, Physics, Engineering Physics or Biophysics)
  • 3+ years’ industry experience in data science or related roles
  • Knowledge and solid understanding of statistics and statistical analysis
  • Expert in data management, data analysis and reporting tools (e.g., Python, R, Matlab, SQL, SAS, Tableau)
  • Demonstrated experience with multiphysics simulation software (e.g., COMSOL, ANSYS, Sim4Life)
  • Solid understanding of the underlying math and physics of multiphysics simulations for validation and optimization
  • Knowledge and understanding of signal processing and image processing in particular
  • Strong programming skills (C/C++, Python, Matlab)
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail
  • Enthusiasm for tackling hard problems and a strong drive to get things done
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and technical documentation skills
  • Great interpersonal skills, including maturity, teamwork, respect, courtesy, tact, and discretion

Ideally, you will have experience in the following areas:

  • Medical devices development and regulations
  • Medical image analysis
  • RF, computational fluid dynamics and thermal simulations
  • Knowledge and understanding of ultrasound physics
  • Machine learning and deep learning libraries (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, Caffe)
  • GPUs and CUDA programming
  • UI implementation/engineering
