04 Oct 2016 FinTech Day 2 Recap
As part of Vancouver Startup Week, we hosted our second FinTech Day at The Hub on September 29th! Presented by Central 1 and part of the BC Tech FinTech Program, FinTech Day 2 was an opportunity for the community to come together for both an informative workshop and a networking event. The afternoon began with a sold out workshop with Chris Galloway and Jonathan Kutner of Central 1 as they lead the attendees through an overview of regulatory and financial basics.
The workshop was followed up by the community event, which was also the final destination for the Vancouver Startup Week Community Crawl. The event featured demos from awesome local FinTech companies such as Progressa, Hyperwallet, Beanworks and Frontfundr. Additional highlights were the in-depth talk delivered by Deborah Wilson, Senior Legal Counsel and Principal, Legal and Regulatory Affairs, Payments Canada, and the closing keynote address from Lisa Shields of Hyperwallet/FI.SPAN. Shields shared some candid realities of starting a FinTech company, drawing from personal experiences and some of the harder lessons she learned. The talk ended with Sheilds reminding the crowd that in order to be successful, it is essential to look at neighboring companies as allies, not competition.
