BC Tech announced today that it will be closing its Cube facility in Railtown effective 17 May. The 6000 square foot location was established as an Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality/Mixed Reality community hub in September 2017 with the support of key industry founding partners and in partnership with the AR/VR Society.

The Cube’s primary source of operational funding was BC Tech, who accessed federal funding for the Cube via the Canadian Accelerator and Incubator Program. That program came to an end on March 31, 2019. BC Tech was unable to secure provincial or federal funding to enable the Cube to remain open.

A central resource for BC’s Tech community the Cube was home to over 20 AR/VR/MR companies and hosted community events.  It has hosted several government announcements including:

  • the announcement in October 2017 by federal Minister Navdeep Bains that BC’s Digital Technology Supercluster had made it through to the final round
  • the announcement in February 2018 by provincial Minister of Jobs, Trade and Technology Bruce Ralston and BC Green Party Leader Andrew Weaver appointing Dr Alan Winter as BC’s first Innovation Commissioner.
