In a recent BC Tech’s ScaleUp Academy Webinar Session, Rob Goehring of Wiser AI unpacked AI’s core categories, real-world applications, and its profound impacts on society. Rob Goehring broke down AI into six foundational areas, each with specific capabilities that support various applications:

  1. Machine Learning & Deep Learning enable autonomous learning from data, powering applications like recommendations and predictive text.
  2. Natural Language Processing & Speech Recognition allow AI to interpret and generate human language, exemplified by chatbots and voice assistants.

  5. Knowledge Representation enables logical data analysis, aiding finance and healthcare.
  6. Ethics & Societal Impact highlight the need to address AI’s effects on privacy and jobs, with regulatory policies like Canada’s Bill C-27 focusing on responsible AI integration.

Practical Applications of AI

Goehring shared compelling examples of how these categories of AI are applied across different sectors. In retail, machine learning powers personalized recommendations, while in healthcare, computer vision aids in diagnostic imaging and precision surgery. Autonomous systems, such as delivery drones and self-driving cars, are gradually entering the market, promising to revolutionize logistics and transportation.

NLP and speech recognition are critical to improving accessibility in customer support and enabling interactive AI systems. For instance, voice-activated devices like Amazon’s Alexa or Google Assistant illustrate how NLP and speech recognition are making digital interactions more intuitive.
