PeaceGeeks is a non-profit organization that creates digital tools to support greater connection, peace and safety for those who have been displaced. We are based in Vancouver, Canada, and Amman, Jordan.

We have a number of projects in motion, funded by the Government of Canada and Google.org Canada. These projects include the development of an app for newcomers to Canada called Arrival Advisor, and a community initiative in Jordan working to combat polarization online.

Position Description

Note: This is a remote-first position, with the option for hybrid (part-time in the office) work. Our office is based at the HiVE coworking space in Gastown (210-128 West Hastings St., Vancouver).

PeaceGeeks is looking for a UX/UI Design Intern for a 4-month BC Tech internship to join our team! The responsibilities of the Design Intern will cover visual/UI design and UX design.

The intern will report to the Design Lead, but will also work in a cross-functional manner with our product and fundraising team members.

For Visual Design: You will primarily collaborate with our Design Lead, Chief Development Officer, and CEO, to create visual assets that support PeaceGeeks’ storytelling, communications and branding efforts.

For UX: You will primarily collaborate with our Design Lead, Product Manager, and developers to craft, test, and iterate on inclusive and delightful product experiences for PeaceGeeks’ Arrival Advisor mobile app, which helps newcomers to settle in Canada. The intern may also have opportunities to support the service design and product strategy of Snapp, a project that matches newcomers to skilled professionals for employment advice.

Tasks & Responsibilities

Visual Design:

  • Create presentation decks, reports, and other marketing and outreach assets for executives and project leads
  • Provide creative direction and suggestions based on research of the audience and industry trends
  • Executing layouts, typography, iconography, colour theory, and compositions to develop compelling visual designs and concepts
  • Ensure cohesive look & feel across all channels in accordance with brand/style guide
  • Strategize ways to improve visual asset creation processes, such as creating/optimizing templates, suggesting new types of storytelling assets
  • Propose new ideas and providing constructive critique on existing ideas
  • Prepare and maintain design documentation and presentations
  • Attend meetings and help the team with other marketing, fundraising and administrative tasks as needed

Product and UX Design:

  • Conduct product design activities, such as: project ideation and discovery; generating user flows, wireframes, sketches, prototypes, and other design deliverables quickly and reliably
  • Assist with designing user studies, conducting discovery, and interpreting research
  • Assist with training team members on facilitating research
  • Turn concepts into realistic product designs that address strategic goals and help drive product discussions
  • Deliver production-ready specs and work with developers to support QA, release, and post-release
  • Identify and suggest actionable ways to improve design process, creative outputs, or user interface based on audience impact and research


The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Has/pursuing an education or experience in Design, Digital Art, Interactive Arts, UX/UI, Technology, Film, Communications, Marketing, or able to demonstrate related experience
  • Exceptional visual design skills, with a portfolio and experience with Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, Sketch (or similar wireframing and design tool)
  • Thoughtful creative skills and professional judgment in solving design challenges
  • Knowledge of design methods, particularly user-centered design principles
  • Comfortable adapting to a constantly changing work environment
  • Comfortable working in teams, individually or remotely
  • Consistently looks for ways to help support the different operational functions
  • Excellent people skills and courteous phone etiquette
  • Creative, detailed and analytical thinker
  • Takes initiative and can start and complete tasks with basic direction
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize work to meet deadlines
  • Effective communication and organization skills

Nice to have

  • Experience with usability testing and design research, qualitative and qualitative
  • Familiarity working within an Agile process
  • Experience with software development, analytics
  • Fundraising or marketing experience
  • Experience with Google Drive, Slack, Salesforce
  • Passionate about technology and knowledgeable about humanitarian or immigrant and refugee issues; past experience working in an NGO, nonprofit or community organization

Hours and Compensation

  • 37.5h/week, latest start date: Sept, latest end date: Mar 2023
  • $25/hr or more, based on Internship guidelines
